At MRN, we customize our physician peer review evaluations according to the needs of the organization requesting the review.
In general, however, our Focused Professional Practice Evaluations (FPPEs) are objective evaluations of a physician’s clinical performance, which can include:
- review of the patient or patient’s medical record
- analysis and conclusions of a clinically active, board-certified physician who is in the same specialty as the physician under review
- recommendations for specific improvements to hospital policies, protocols, and procedures
Regardless of what triggered the physician peer review – whether it was a single incident, a random evaluation, or a complex set of circumstances – our legal nurse consultants, and the physician experts we work with, are discrete and professional. Read testimonials from some of our clients about working with our team of legal nurse consultants.
If we are facilitating an FPPE or external peer review because of a specific medical case or incident, we’ll typically look at the four cornerstones of patient care.
Peer Review: Diagnostic Workup
Peer review of the diagnostic workup can include whether the initial level of care was appropriate, whether documentation was recorded in a timely manner, and whether the use of diagnostic imaging services was timely and appropriate.
Peer Review: Patient Management
Peer review of patient management can include whether the ordering and administration of medications was appropriate, whether the patient’s length of stay was appropriate, and whether complications and risks were anticipated and addressed.
Peer Review: Patient Discharge
Peer review of patient discharge can include whether the patient was discharged to an appropriate level of care, whether the patient received proper care instructions, and whether the discharge summary was timely and complete.
Peer Review: Relationships With Patients And Medical Staff
Peer review of how the physician related to the patient and other medical staff can include whether the patient was satisfied with the doctor, whether any interactions were inappropriate, and whether the use of consultants was appropriate.
